Why Berlusconi was defeated for re-election
Well, I am sure there are several reasons, why Berlusconi was defeated and finally lost these latest general elections. The most important one to me seems, that Berlusconi and his right coalition totally underestimated and miscalculated how Italians living abroad would vote. There is the large Italo-American community, Italian-Australians, Italians living in Argentina, South Africa and many other places allover this planet. In total, there are some estimated 3.5 million Italians living overseas. For the very first time, they were given the opportunity to vote, expressing there will on how and by who Italy should be governed for the next years. The right coalition took it for granted, that the vast majority of these Italian expats would vote in favor of Berlusconi. Most of them were and still are seen through very nostalgic glasses. There are those special cousins living abroad, having no clue about anything, but the Italian flag placed on their porch, Italian mamas preparing some pasta, while the husband with tears in the eyes is listening "O sole mio" on the radio. Thank god this stereotype is more than stupid. At the end a majority of these Italians was just fed up with the way how Berlusconi represented Italy, both at home and abroad.
